"Hote MJ" (2019)Acrylic on paper. 22.5"X30.5"For this work I was thinking about how people's messy spaces can serve as truer portrait than a mere rendering of their body can. The beer and the spilled cards tell the recent history of this girl.Like basically all of my works, this piece includes collage as well! The entire work is painted, but some elements were rendered separately and adhered after. For example, the female figure, the beer bottles, the artwork on the walls, and the deck of cards (I made an entire tiny deck of cards)

In fact, this painting is modeled after an analog collage I first rendered on paper from vintage magazines. Though I went about it rather automatically without much thought, I see it now as a comment how women have been viewed through the ages, namely in the era these clippings came from. The woman here is not only objectified, but she has been stamped with an expiration date on her desirability.
