Dysfunctional Dollhouse (2019)Acrylic paint and collage on watercolor paper. 28”X20”A little insight : I was thinking about my childhood when I made this. I used to love drawing those quintessential dollhouse house structures, cut in half to expose the inners. My childhood was complicated and dysfunctional. I felt like as an adult rendering a dollhouse needed to be truthful in admitting some unrest and confusion. I composed the piece to guide the eye steadily through planes but there are also some dead ends. The multiple perspectives represents the multiple perspectives of the members of the family I lived with, some points converge, some points never do.

Sugar and alcohol are depicted, which I imagine fueling the many people and insects to continue to hustle and bustle about the composition. Termites scurry which I consider an omen of productivity and destruction. Though tall buildings and other advancements are being made in the picture, I also aimed to provide a sense that it could all collapse very soon.

Collage items added in summer of 2017 finished the hitherto latent "failed" intaglio from 2014.

This painted collage began as swatches of paper from which I cut most of the objects you see. Each fruit loop and each tone in the hands is a separate clipped piece of paper. Drawing loosely from the illustrative style of Eric Carle and his "Hungry Caterpillar" book, I aimed to highlight the best albeit perhaps most outwardly trivial parts of the day.A large part of my practice is waking very early, drinking coffee, and getting to work on projects. That being, this work can be read as autobiographical.
